Stultifying Bureaucracy, Steakburgers and Severe Burnout

Sunday 24th November 2014

Good to have a bit of a lie in this morning. Jenni was up before me! Mainly admin today then made up some copies of my book. Jenni has been watching Doctor Who programmes. I kept folding, gluing and trimming. Read bits and pieces on Facebook and listened to The Smiths. Watched Rob Auton video. Ok. That’s me. Done. 9.47pm.

Monday 25th November 2013

Long slog of a day trying to stay on the prep for end of term, but the formatting of paperwork is a real pain. Jenni has been downstairs by herself most of the day. Lots of shouting and cursing and wanting to ditch paperwork but hopefully I’ll get through it all by the end of the week. Been listening to a lot of Morrissey. Mel McEvoy gave me some nice feedback on my poem from last week. Writing Marathon is booked for Wednesday 8th January 2014 at Newcastle Lit & Phil. OK. 10.26pm.

Tuesday 26th November 2013

Up at half nine. Morning pages. Went to Waddy early, tried to sort paperwork. Prep for session. A2Z, Cinquain, Kenning, Triolet. More photocopying afterwards. Home to emails and more end of term prep for Wednesday session. Took me till nine o’clock to fill gaps. Don’t have much to say. Paperwork pretty much wiping me out at present. 9.35pm.

Wednesday 27th November 2013

Morning pages a big rant about college paperwork. Pleased I got to talk about it with a fellow frustrated facilitator. Posted marathon online. Four places gone, four places left. 9.31pm.

Thursday 28th November 2013

Turned out to be a pretty good day. Word wheels and A2Z of advice at Mind in Consett this morning with some hilarious results. Had a bit of rehearsal of Speaking for the Majority in the 21st Century. Lunchtime discussion with Waddy staff about novels – why, who, what. Then an informal afternoon catch-up session. Put some Poetry Jam posters up. Now on the 21 to Newcastle for JibbaJabba. Hoping to get a look around and some food, but don’t think I’ll go to The Goose tonight. Only one place left on the marathon. Gonna try to get a weekend one set up – probably Sunderland. Pleased end of term is here. 5.00pm.

Friday 29th November 2013

Well done to everyone who made last night's JibbaJabba so special. The place was packed with talent and such a supportive audience. Excellent open mic and top-notch guests, and the most emotional finale to a headline set I've ever seen at The Cumberland Arms. I knew Robert Auton was going to be good, having seen his Sky show at the Edinburgh Fringe in August, but last night's gig was just incredible. Standing ovation thoroughly well deserved. Bigly thanks to JibbaJabba with Kirsten from Apples and Snakes for consistently blowing people away by programming such high-quality spoken word shows. Keep it going!

In Newcastle I had the choice of Kangaroo, Venison, some other animal I forget the name of. Bottled it and opted for a steakburger from the food market at Grey’s Monument. It was nice but fuck, four quid. I could’ve been to The Goose for a carvery and as much veg as I can possibly eat for £3.69. Bought some paper stock and greyboard to make a hard backed book. Then got the shopping in at Consett. Home to emails and facebook updates. Then at half seven I recommitted the sin of shopping at the new Tesco – stocked up on pies, lemon juice and ginger biscuits. It was good to spend an hour scamming free reads of music, mountain bike and writing magazines. Freezing cold tonight. Heating on almost two hours and legs still numb. Jen is staying in Gateshead. I’m in Consett till Wednesday. Lots of rehearsals, loose ends and housework. 10.58pm.

Saturday 30th November 2013

Slept in my clothes last night coz it was so fucking cold. Been checking out art journal books online and doing bits of admin. Listening to the latest album by The Mission. Looking forward to seeing them in a fortnight. Where has the year gone?

Thanks to Jenni for proofing/feedback on my promo material this evening. Has turned out to be quite a productive day. 10.40pm.
