ANOTHER WEEK

Monday 18th September 2017

Morning pages. Emails. Lesson plans updated for this week’s sessions. Back up lessons. Thanks to Jenni for help with further edits on Laughter To Split Glass. Amended corrections list. Page printouts. Fixed manuscript, but not 100%. Jenni told me to leave it for a few days for fear of changing stuff unnecessarily. Chuffed to have my course sorted for tomorrow and notebooks updated. Admin for private evening course. I’ll be pleased to get more work done on Anomalies book. Need more colour pix for my prototype this weekend. 11.13 pm.

Tuesday 19th September 2017

Listened to Lou Reed live in London. Had a front row ticket for Newcastle City Hall during the 1992 Magic and Loss tour but he cancelled and I never got another chance. He came to The Sage but I was working. Hubert Selby and Raymond Chandler monologues set to rock music, he says. Love Lou’s lyrics. Jenni bought me his Pass Thru Fire ‘collected’ a few years back. Today went well. Good turn out for first session of new course. Got photos printed for Anomalies but not happy with running order – rushed the file this morning before going for the bus – can get them run off at Waddy again tomorrow. Enjoyed sunshine. Paid a fuel bill, answered some emails. Only one session tomorrow. Then I’ll be sewing up a hardback on Thursday. Hope the money doesn’t run out this autumn. 10.27 pm.

Wednesday 20th September 2017

Fell asleep on the last bus back to Consett from Jenni’s place. We met up at five for tea at eat4less then browsed in Tiger and Paperchase. Spoke to Emma Whitehall in Thorntons in Eldon Square. Went down to Central Station so Jen could buy a train ticket. Then off to Tesco before a bit of gruesome telly in the form of Taggart – guillotined fingers, death threats... Wrote a poem about riding a spacehopper. This entry is over fifty minutes late. 12.50 am.

Thursday 21st September 2017

Got up about half ten. Checked out some stuff for World Mental Health Day but it clashes with one of my workshops. Sewed up four hundred pages (one folded hundred sheets) for preliminary Anomalies 1989-2014 book. Thought it would be a nightmare, but using the fancy curved needle made it quite easy to get between the signatures without repeated opening of previous pages. Chuffed with the way the mix of material sits: typewriter font, mag repro pages, 16 pages of colour photos; essays, journals, poems. Love it. But will whittle some away this autumn before I’m happy to share. 11.41 pm.

Friday 22nd September 2017

At Margaret ‘Maggy Moonbeam’ Strickland’s funeral this afternoon. A loving celebration of the life and times of a remarkable woman. Kind, caring, entertaining. Nice to hear so many people saying nice things. She was always supportive and it was great to see her develop from budding writer in early Waddy classes to the powerful onstage presence fronting rock band The Hypnotix State. Jane arranged an amazing birthday party for Margaret last month and did her sister proud again today. Pleased to see Waddy people there. And back at the Duke of Wellington. Me and Karen Sikora read a few of Maggy’s poems and heard more touching stories from Jane and others. Nice to see Helena and sit with Maggy’s gang. Left about quarter past nine. Big hugs for Jane and a walk through Durham till the bus came. Rest well, Maggy Moonbeam. 11.40 pm.

Saturday 23rd September 2017

Lie in. Then uploaded some pix taken in Consett yesterday that may form the basic image for Anomalies book jacket. I’d really like a linocut for the front. Letter stamps for title down cloth spine. Progress has been slow today. Thinking about Margaret and her sister Jane. This evening I made up the next Poetry Jam event page. Got an unexpected late positive response for my proposed Wednesday evening course – which means it can now go ahead. Yay! Early night and book work tomorrow. 11.21 pm.

Sunday 24th September 2017

Kitchen was a tip so that took up my morning. Afternoon reminder from Elaine Cusack for feedback on Gail Curry’s debut poetry collection. Then a few hours putting the cover on Anomalies. A few glue spots on an inside edge. But it’s only a proof otherwise I’d have done new cloth and boards. Chuffed with the concept. Will tweak and alter parts in coming weeks. 11.38 pm.
