Good to have a bit of a lie in. I’m trying to write fiction instead of conventional morning pages this year but missed having them as an outlet for stream of consciousness and letting off steam upon waking. Feel like I need to do a follow-up exercise to get all the dross out of my system. Feel that by trying to write stories that aren’t autobiographical I’m locking myself out of my preferred creative process – like there’s a barrier between my writing mind and the material on the page and it leaves me feeling dissatisfied, in a bad temper. Might be good to monitor how the process makes me feel. If I’m honest, I’ve never really enjoyed trying to write sustained fiction. Flash, character monologues, poems and mini-memoir are fine. This year will be mainly about promoting Laughter to Split Glass, finishing Deluxe Anomalies, editing my 2017/18 notes into a usable manuscript and making a collaged perzine-style annual. 11.30 pm.
Wednesday 2nd January 2019
Managed to sleep six hours without getting up in the night to use the toilet. Added another three pages to my fiction notes in morning pages then put the blue bin out. Had my honey and lemon dink and a bowl of porridge then read a few short stories by Shelley Day. Some of the shortest remind me of Henri Michaux’s pieces from ‘Darkness Moves’. Sheila posted the book launch page on Facebook. Me and Jenni did a load of invites for it. I wanted to work on a couple of hardback book builds but got a niggling headache so just did easier tasks from the To Do list. Posted another STEVE ACHIEVES. Limited scope, very banal, a bit of fun really – and that’s kind of the point. Festive period is over. Tomorrow I’ll be more full-on with my work. Less time for anything not related to writing. Me and Jenni watched a documentary about Waco siege. Strange situation. 10.38 pm.

Annoyed with myself for not being able to sustain a fictional stance on morning pages. Stupid, really – literature isn’t the goal of morning pages anyway; clearing away the dross is their sole purpose. So stupid to expect fiction before breakfast. Sure, there are days when a dream is lucid and engaging enough to commit to paper. But that’s a rarity, not the norm. For me it’s all about interior monologue and rhythm. Even if it’s based on a 16-question character sketch, I get into that first person headspace and just let rip. And if there’s a decent rhythm then it’s going to be something like a poem. I’ll be listening for sound repetition – not necessarily full rhyme, mainly assonance, consonance – and then I’ll get a bit of energy into the piece, and if I’m lucky it will say something that surprises me. 12.25 pm.
Felt a bit tired these last few days. Talked to my sister Diane and nephew Kyle in town. Bank transactions, food supplies. Jen bought a Greggs vegan sausage roll. Back home I cracked on with my To Do List. Prepared a lesson for next Tuesday’s Waddington Street Centre writing course. 11.03 pm.
Friday 4th January 2019
Today was all about bookmaking. Had a few requests over the last few weeks and only just found the headspace to put the pages in order. Took eight hours to print individual coloured pages of four hardbacks in one go. I’ll struggle to come up with any achievements that aren’t writing related today. Just watched the Graham Norton storytelling programme. Loads of good anecdotes from guests. I rarely experience anything I’d feel capable of adlibbing onstage. I script pretty much everything. I booked another guest for February’s Poetry Jam. It’s going to be a great night. I need to do more gig rehearsals over the next few days. 11.40 pm.

Morning pages was an anecdote about a local road accident from a year ago. Then further page preparation for two private hardback books and dust jacket colour schemes. Preliminary poetry selection for headline set at The Stanza. Watched talent shows on TV. Pleased with response to my little STEVE ACHIEVES posts on Facebook. 10.49 pm.
Sunday 6th January 2019
Out to town for dinner supplies – and hairspray to use as a cheap alternative to charcoal fixative. Listened to Sounds of the Seventies on radio. Jenni's last day here. We've had a good fortnight. Back to the usual routine tomorrow. 8.29 pm.
