Every Monday I spit and stomp
and slam about and want to say: Fuck all of this; overworked for peanuts, a
fraction of the going rate, might as well just jack the whole fucking thing in
and stuff leaflets through letterboxes for sixteen hours a week. And then,
miraculously, by bedtime I’ve got all my forms filled, handouts printed and I’m
ready to go out Tuesday and kick it with a group of writers. Would have liked to
be sorted a bit earlier so I could get out on the bike tonight. But there’ll be
other days. Enjoyed reading online Jordan (punk) interviews. Would
love to read her book ‘Defying Gravity’. Will get it sometime this year. Idiots
on Newsnight now trying to justify corporate greed. 11.00 pm.
Tuesday 14th May 2019
Up, ready and out on the 20
to eleven bus. Read more of Helen Steadman’s ‘Sunwise’ novel. Got papers sorted
at Waddy. Used correct plastic bowl with handle for soup so I could eat it
seated instead of standing at the counter. Delivered a productive workshop,
incorporating editing techniques. Word from Leisureworks is I can host a
writing marathon at the Lodge in Blackhill and Consett Park.
Put out feelers for that today. This evening I was too tired for much. Slept on
the couch then watched start of Punk and the Pistols documentary on YouTube. Enjoyed
Years and Years on BBC1. Initially thought it was going to be boring but well
impressed with grim depiction of future Britain: transhumanism, refugee
camps and nuclear war – horrible really. Hard to write tonight, but it’s been a
good day. OK. 11.34 pm.
Wednesday 15th May 2019
Slow day. Thought dictation to
tablet would be quicker for typesetting but it took me ages to edit my blog.
Watched the rest of Punk and the Pistols on YouTube. Online chat with Jenni
about dodgy daytime reality shows, supermarkets, marathon dates and possibility
of local summer writing course. Checked out logistics for Michael Monroe gig in
Manchester.
Can’t afford it at present. Don’t know how work is going to be this autumn. Checked
out flash fiction sites. Aim to send out more work. 11.03 pm.

Chuffed to get grass cut and
sort freezer. Gig set prepared for Babble Gum. Read some 100-word stories, James
Kelman’s ‘The Gate’ from ‘If This Is Your Life’ and listened to The Cure’s
‘Disintegration’. Usual Brexit stuff on Newsnight. Can only manage a couple of
items per week on it now. Good to know TM is on the way out. Wonder which idiot
is next to front Tory party. 11.31 pm

Workshop was good. Free
association. Six sentence paragraph. ‘Moving House’ poem analysis and Seven Ways of
Looking. Then a drink in Wetherspoons and a few chips courtesy of Alan. Bought
some cakes at Barry’s, then Tesco for meagre supplies. Home by quarter-past
three. Scrolled Facebook till fish fingers and fritters time. Watched six
o’clock news. Did writing marathon Facebook post. Hope weather holds out for
tomorrow’s ride to Jen’s place. 11.20 pm.

Enthusiasm for the day
dwindles away. Usually at Jenni’s on a Sunday. Spent ages trying to type stuff.
Hands hurting. Extreme mental fatigue. Tried reading various books, including
old Redbeck poetry collections by Alan Dixon and Ian Robinson. Tried to read
David Almond’s Skellig but fell asleep. Tried to watch Vampires Suck but the
DVD wouldn’t play. Settled for extras from the Joy Division documentary. Excellent!
