Did my first summer session. Short warm-up exercises. Scalp is sore. Flaky skin. Sunburn. Feels like I’ve shaved it down to raw flesh. Brought a curry home from Durham. Sat at desktop all evening. Did a read-though of story for Sunday Assembly. It’s fifteen minutes long. I’ll try to stick to the facts. It has one or two little asides… Listened to Toyah. Checked updates from Julia Eff on Twitter. Read an article about Sinead O’Connor. I did nothing major. 10.52 pm.
Tuesday 9th July 2019
Shoulder strain is worse today. Hardly surprising – lugging a bag full of paper, pens, books, tablet, food, etc between bus trips. Workshop in North Shields went well. Four-poem set then Acrostics, finish the sentence, objects and lies, Kennings, ended with I Am poem. Five writing exercises plus a mini-gig – not bad going for two hours. Participants engaged well. Friendly atmosphere. The library has a canny range of poetry books. Carver, McGough, Heaney, dozens of others. This evening I went to Jen’s for a few hours. As Time Goes By. Last of the Summer Wine. And the fucking Tory leadership contest. Jenni is good with the social media wisecracks and now has employment utilizing her online skills. I Facebooked all the way from Gateshead to Blackhill. Nipped into Tesco then last bus back to base. 11.15 pm.
Wednesday 10th July 2019
Lousy day. Right arm is in an uproar. Bicep hurts more than shoulder. Online research points towards bicep tendonitis but hopefully not. If no better in a couple of days I’ll go to the doctor. Annoying, coz I can’t get grass cut or carry bags of shopping. Need to use wheelie case in left hand for everything. Listened to rehearsal recording of Sunday Assembly piece, did some copy-ups and listened to a radio adaptation of Clive Barker’s ‘The Forbidden’. A few Toyah albums – Ophelia’s Shadow, Prostitute and Best Of. Tried to read a book about Crowley but fell asleep. Really concerned about the arm. Hope I can get it sorted soon. Maybe should just make docs appointment straight away. Sick of setbacks. Watched No-Deal Brexit Panorama tonight. Who knows how bad it will be. Didn’t watch the Labour anti-Semitism one. I’m a bit slow today. Knackered. 11.50 pm.

Aches, pains, shoulder and bicep hassle. Snap crackle pop. Think it will be a couple of weeks before I feel decent. Trying to rest. Pleased I just have the Sunday gig then no more besides Poetry Jam till late August. Then I’m doing a big set in Featherstone as a guest at Centre of Britain Slam in September. I got an application submission done for Consett arts festival today. Packed up a book order, read ‘The Book of Blood’ by Clive Barker this evening. And some Lou Reed lyrics – the Berlin album. Had another run through Sunday Assembly. Watched a 2016 Rollins interview. Did basic prep for Monday’s workshop. 10.15 pm.
Friday 12th July 2019
Early rise. Morning pages. Bit of Facebook then ride into Consett. Bank transactions. Got ‘Airhead’ by Emily Maitlis from the library. Read a bit about Trump on the bus. Enjoyed the day at Waddy Learners Event. Always good to see the music group perform. Nice to see ex-staff and people I don’t often get to chat to. Enjoyed Steve Wakefield’s slide show about the dog Waddington and talk about revitalising ourselves… Bought a few things at Tesco before getting case sorted for weekend away. Bus ride to Newcastle was okay. 25-strong bunch of teenagers got on at Rowlands Gill, started singing and chanting. Jenni isn’t home so I’m in the attic alone. Was like an oven when I got here. Might watch Newsnight in a while. 10.25 pm.

Up early. Porridge. Checked out Facebook, did morning pages. Took Jen’s mam on the metro over to North Shields for fantastic Renata and Trev farewell gig. Brilliant turnout, mint songs and lots of love in the room. Food supplies on way back. Watched game shows then early night coz I’ve got a gig tomorrow. 9.45 pm.

Woke around seven, up before eight. Shaved and showered before anyone else was about. Caught a bit of morning politics. Then out to Sunday Assembly. Bit of a late start but a good time. Haven’t been to one at Alphabetti Theatre before. Pleased I made a good impression. Chatted with people about my piece. Read a bit of ‘Airhead’ back at Jen’s. Chicken curry for tea. Watched game shows and documentary about West Boro Baptist Church bigotry then Chocolate documentary. 10.37 pm.
