Seven Days

Monday 15th January 2018

Jen’s radio alarm clock blasted out Chris Evans show at time of day when you can do without hypo-babble (I’m guilty of same, I suppose) but at least he played Led Zep’s ‘Black Dog’. Good morning in Consett library, taking part in Rachel Cochrane’s diary-inspired fiction workshop. Home around half one. Had some toast then cracked on with Waddy writing session plan. College evening class is yet to be filled. Listened to Alison Moyet; made up morning pages book. 11.42 pm.

Tuesday 16th January 2018

Motivated, despite the cold, and out to Durham. Enrolments sufficient for afternoon course: fun session using portrait sketches plus collaborative action and consequence prompts. Read a Woman’s Weekly story which the group were surprised to find enjoyable. Trying to forego central heating now; will need it on for a while tomorrow, but out all day Thursday. NI contributions cheque not yet cashed by HMRC. I’ll give it a couple more days. Hoping to get a lot done tomorrow but this evening was a struggle.
11.42 pm.

Wednesday 17th January 2018

Copy of Gary McMahon’s short story collection ‘How to Make Monsters’ ordered last December was lost in the post. Replacement finally arrived this morning. Cracking tales, some set in Newcastle. Most engaging fiction I’ve read for a while. Poetry Jam event page is up. Took ages; internet connection so slow these days. Keyed in more ‘Confessions of an Isolationist’; fuck, it’s bleak. No wonder I cracked up after first draft in 1997 – makes my ‘Shades of Grey’ light comedy. I’ll chip away forty minutes per session and submit excerpts to small mags – hopefully find takers. Some already published in recent years. Still not sure about ‘Isolationist’ in title though. Good online chat with Jenni; listened to Emilie Autumn. 11.25 pm.

Thursday 18th January 2017

Took a while to get outside but enjoyed walk into town; big woolly cardigan under leather jacket. Really warm: removed gloves and hat. Post office closed due to snow. Bugger! – needed to send Mam and Ernie’s wedding anniversary card. Did a few hours copying-up in Consett library then walked down to Leadgate, where I knew postmaster Griff Elliot (who also runs Griffin Print from the same premises) would be open no matter what. Good to see him again. Nice walk toward dusk back into town. Another couple of hours in the library: copied up rest of 2017 stuff and pleasantly surprised to find lots of it suitable for open mics this year. Been eating fruit, veg and chicken all week; read a bit more Gary McMahon. 10.57 pm.

Friday 19th January 2018

Morning job search and research for arts stuff. Still not happy with final set selections for Squeak-Easy so I’ll have another look tomorrow. Might even use the new material not yet typed. Travel logistics for Toyah gig in Yarm sorted for next month. I'll see Rollins, Toyah and Michael Gira in the space of eight days. I’m still awaiting college confirmation on evening class. Read some more Gary McMahon stories; had a big chicken dinner, porridge and that. 11.05 pm.

Saturday 20th January 2018

Did final invoice and type-ups for Appletree poets; tweaked poems from Rachel Cochrane workshop and sent those off. Ate mega lunch of eggs on toast with grilled potato fritters, tomatoes and onion rings; listened to Toyah; read and listed poems and prose for development whilst on bus to Gateshead. Out to Tesco with Jenni for food supplies: still eating lots of fruit. Had an evening of television; fell asleep during QI. 11.08 pm.

Sunday 21st January 2018

Lush lazy time with comfort food. Enjoyed watching ‘Heavy Metal Parking Lot’ DVD with about three hours of extras; the main feature is only fifteen minutes – quite remarkable the film makers got so much mileage from interviewing an assortment of metal heads before a 1986 Judas Priest concert at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, USA. Thanks to Jenni for a great present. 11.15 pm.
