Late rise and off to Consett, sorted finances and picked up library books. Two true crime studies of serial killers by Christopher Berry Dee; four young adult novels: After Tomorrow by Gillian Cross, A Waste of Good Paper by Sean Taylor, The Sacrifice by Charlie Higson and Born Scared by Kevin Brooks; also Philip K Dick’s Electric Dreams stories from the TV series and JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter. Read all of Born Scared in four hours. Really good story of a boy called Elliot, housebound by anxiety, who braves a winter blizzard in search of his mother when she doesn’t return home with his emergency medication. Fast paced, alternating first/third person narrative. Loved it. No chocolate today. 10.22 pm.

Sewed up pages of a standard ‘Anomalies’ and placed in the book press for twenty-four hours. Went out on the black Giant STP (street, trail, park) bike this afternoon. Did some wheelies, rollbacks and kick-turns. Seem to have another sore throat. Hope it goes away soon… Been listening to Iggy Pop and Mike Monroe. Spent way too long looking online for replacement rigid forks for the STP bike. Was pinning my hopes on a pair of DMR trail blades but an online forum states there’s a possibility that being cromoly steel they’ll weaken the alloy frame’s headtube. So I’ve been trying to find decent alloy forks of 440mm axle to crown length with V-brake mounts as well as disc brake mounts. Such a chore to get compatible anything. Only eBay have anything close. I’d rather speak to a real shop. Will sit on this idea for a few weeks. If I earn some extra money this spring I’ll look again. Cheese on toast, hot chocolate and an early night. 10.32 pm.

Sore throat. Bit of a cough. Got an early call from doctor’s surgery. Appointment tomorrow now 20 mins earlier at ten o’clock. Surprised my phone actually worked. These last few weeks it’s given a half-hearted single ring then fallen silent. Voicemail comes and goes. I hardbound a copy of Anomalies in dark blue denim this morning. Filed the latest bunch of Steve Achieves this afternoon and have since been chipping away at deluxe Anomalies. It’s going to take a while longer. I’ve just inserted over twenty pieces of poetry and prose from my very first previously unpublished collection and will reshuffle other bits to get an equal balance of pages for each of the twenty-six years represented. Had an online chat with Jenni. We are both a bit under the weather. Which is ironic, given it’s the warmest February I can remember. Enjoyed listening to Michael Monroe today. Then TV Smith early this evening, finishing off with Heaven Upside Down and The Pale Emperor by Marilyn Manson. 11.07 pm.

Doctor Worthy didn’t know why I had an appointment this week either. Unusual to be asked about mental health issues from over twenty years ago. Haven’t taken medication for over five years. He said bipolar diagnosis of 1998 was correct but no longer applies. If I had an ordinary day job things might not be so rosy but it’s easy to get by when you aren’t challenged, basically your own boss. Bought food in town then came home to make a dust jacket for the recently assembled hardback book. Ate chilli and rice for tea then did the Poetry Jam poster and event page. Watched a documentary on Fred and Rose West. I though she died years ago, but is still actually festering away in Durham jail on a full-life tariff; hubby got off lightly by hanging himself… I’m coughing and snotting on. Question Time on BBC1 tonight. The usual Brexit bollocks. Be glad when April arrives. Fools. OK. 10.56 pm.

Bogged down with cold. Remade yesterday’s dust jacket coz I wasn’t happy with it then kind of run out of energy when it came to reading stuff. Fell asleep for an hour then sat with my very rough attempt at sustained prose fiction from NaNoWriMo 2015. Read the first thirty pages. It’s okay but there’s no real plot. Just disjointed snippets about the main character – exaggerated autobiography. Got more Poetry Jam admin done. Watched music vids for a while. Seem to be having a nostalgia trip for Hanoi Rocks and Michael Monroe solo. Watched the first part of an Andy McCoy (Hanoi’s chief songwriter and guitarist) documentary, but much of it is in Finnish so I couldn’t follow it. Listened to a Kevin Brooks podcast about his novel Born Scared that I read on Monday. A reassuring voice in the not-having-all-the-answers department. Wish this cold would fuck off. 11.26 pm.

Worse than yesterday. Really snotty. Went into town for oranges, Beecham’s powders and to return library books. Picked up Bloodlines by Kevin Brooks. Read it in seventy minutes. Spoke to Jenni on the phone. Staying at home this weekend. Been reading a book about female serial killers tonight. 11.06 pm.

Wanted to be at Attila the Stockbroker’s gig in Gateshead today but I’m still snotty with lurgy so stayed on the couch and read a Harry Potter novel. It was okay. Spotted seven ideas borrowed from other popular fiction, but good on her. Took me about nine hours to read it. Not sure I’d be in a hurry to try another one, mind. 10.12 pm.
